Eastern Pacific Industrial Corporation Berhad ("EPIC Berhad" or "EPIC Group"), through its subsidiary Eastern Pacific Marine Services Sdn Bhd (“EPIC Marine”), is set to transform the maritime industry with the development of its pioneering Green Ship Recycling Facility (“GSRF”) cum Decommissioning Remediation Facility (“DRF”) at Kemaman Port. Occupying a 13-acre site at the Kemaman Supply Base (“KSB”), this cutting-edge facility, the first of its kind in Malaysia, is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2026 and slated to become a cornerstone for sustainable ship recycling and decommissioning in the region.
The GSRF is designed to comply with the highest international environmental and safety standards, including the stringent requirements outlined in the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (“Hong Kong Convention”). This convention, which will enter into force on 26 June 2025, ensures that ships at the end of their operational lives are safely recycled, minimising risks to human health and the environment.
In addition to its strategic location and compliance with top-tier health, safety, and environmental (“HSE”) guidelines, EPIC Group Chief Executive Officer Ts. Haji Muhtar Suhaili noted that the facility is set to revolutionise the disposal of end-of-life ships and platforms through its exceptional potential and efficiency.
“Operating out of Kemaman Port - a strategically located all-weather and deep water port - the GSRF is expected to process between 30,000 to 50,000 metric tons (“MT”) of material annually, making it one of the most efficient and safe ship recycling facilities in the region. This initiative is also optimised for CO2 emission reduction and sustainable non-metal component recycling.”
One of the key features of the GSRF is its wet berth, which is specifically engineered to handle large and complex decommissioning projects, including the deconstruction of offshore platforms. This specialised infrastructure will enable seamless handling of massive structures, thus further positioning the GSRF as a facility of choice for offshore assets disposal.
In addition to its ship recycling capabilities, the GSRF will also function as the Onshore Disposal Yard or Decommissioning Remediation Facility (“DRF”) for offshore platforms that are scheduled for decommissioning. This dual-purpose role reflects EPIC Berhad’s effort to supporting Malaysia’s offshore oil and gas sector in an environmentally responsible manner, ensuring that decommissioning activities are carried out with minimal impact on the environment.
“This facility is more than just a ship recycling yard; it represents a new benchmark in sustainable maritime operations. We believe that the GSRF will not only further diversify our offerings and bolster Kemaman Port’s tranformation into a green port, but also play a pivotal role in advancing the local maritime industry towards a more sustainable future,” added Ts. Haji Muhtar.
EPIC Berhad is confident that the GSRF will serve as a model for the industry, setting new standards for environmental sustainability and operational excellence. This initiative is a significant step towards realising Malaysia’s vision of becoming one of the global leaders in environmentally sound maritime practices, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to green growth and sustainable development.
